Journalism is about telling stories that are important. That function is increasingly in contradiction with how journalism is produced. In a capitalist society, the contradiction produces distractions. In the drive to monetize attention, technology accelerates fragmentation and polarization. A few people get rich, and the rest of us have no way of understanding our world, let alone how to change it. In other societies, without the private profit motive, the news is not a commodity. Good journalism happens because it is socially useful.
