Colstrip, Montana—a town dominated by coal mining and several forty-year-old and obsolete coal-fired power plants (note that only one stack is emitting)—is a classic neoliberal parable. The story is too long for a caption—Montana politics and finances are addicted to coal, the largest untapped coal reserves in the country—but suffice it to say that housing is still not adequate for many workers in this company town.

I've always said: "Coal is too valuable to burn." Maybe now people will consider the economic value of black gold.

Our one-party state gives Colstrip (and NorthWestern Energy) whatever they want. Meanwhile, my last NorthWestern Energy budget billing DOUBLED even though I have rooftop solar.
