Without Protections, Workers are Free to Die
A worker is tethered to a safety harness as he loads bentonite into train cars at this plant owned by Black Hills Bentonite LLC. Of course, the company owners limit their liability—legally—and are forced by public protection measures (called regulations) to prevent injury to their workers. Unions add another layer of protection. Freedom means different things to different people, depending on your relationship to the means of production.
