Most commercial buildings in Butte, America were built before fire impression (sprinkler) systems were required in new construction. Now it's deemed far too expensive to retrofit these buildings: Butte has one-third the population that it had in its mining heyday. Enter the private sector, supplying building owners with "solutions" that do not adequately protect against fires. Without public investment to upgrade older buildings, Butte will continue to lose its legacy buildings, and the opportunity to revitalize a great community.
