Maybe it's because Canyon de Chelly National Monument is the only "federal" property owned by a tribal government that ultimately has the last word on how it is managed. Perhaps it's because this area provides the only public access to an important archaeological site, and is thus trafficked by tourists. There is no denying, however, that the public market at the bottom of the canyon is for most of the year a failure, not providing income to an impoverished community. Could it be that reparations would actually address the injustices and poverty that the Diné families in the canyon have suffered for more than two centuries at the hands of settler colonialism? A moral White House in DC could lead.
