Housing for oilfield workers in the Bakken was in short supply and very expensive while oil prices exploded. Man camps popped up everywhere overnight as wages were high for most workers. When market prices cratered (due to overproduction in a glutted market) lots of operations were no longer profitable. Mass layoffs ensued, and many of those man camps are still there, but empty.
