Housing for oilfield workers in the Bakken was in short supply and very expensive while oil prices were high. Man camps popped up everywhere overnight but wages were high for most workers. When prices dropped (due to overproduction in a glutted market) lots of operations were no longer profitable. Many of those man camps are still there, but empty.
