Max Baucus, Montana's Senator for six terms starting in 1978, ended his political career as President Obama's last Ambassador to China. A conservative Democrat, his imprint on party politics in Montana has led to a steady decline of Democrats in office, especially in the legislature. In this photo, taken two weeks before the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale (an annual spring event in eastern Montana that features anyone running for statewide office), Senator Baucus is seen only on the tee-vee running for re-election.
