Government Levies Protect Cultural Icons from DisappearingThe Mississippi River is constrained as it rushes by the bootheel of Missouri. Nobody would be from here—cultural icon or not—if it were not for the government levees. Those levees were built and are maintained by the federal government as a result of a democratic process that includes levying taxes and administering programs to protect public safety. Right wing politicians have long sought to delegitimize the federal government mainly because they don't like paying taxes for programs that don't distinguish between beneficiaries, i.e., there are "deserving" (rich, white and male) and "undeserving" (everyone else) beneficiaries.https://take-note.com/note-takers/marshall--mayer/notes/government-levies-protect-cultural-icons-from-disappearing/viewhttps://take-note.com/note-takers/marshall--mayer/notes/government-levies-protect-cultural-icons-from-disappearing
